Google Analytics for Coaches: Is Your Marketing Actually Working?
I was sitting with a client last year reviewing her analytics dashboard.
She pointed at a line item labeled Direct and asked, "What is that? And why is it the biggest number on the page?"
I started explaining. Her eyes got wide.
"Nobody has ever told me this," she said.
Most coaches and consultants are in that same position. You are posting, writing, showing up. But the dashboard is full of numbers that feel like noise and one very important signal you may not even know you are reading.
This post is about that signal. And the simple machine underneath it that makes it grow.
Your Website Has One Job. And It Is Probably Not Doing It.
Before we talk about data, let me say something about the thing we are measuring.
Your website has one job. Convert a stranger into someone who books a discovery call with you.
Not to be beautiful. Not to tell your whole story. Not to show everything you offer.
One job. One call to action. One next step.
When a website is built as a brochure, it is designed to impress. When it is built as a machine, it is designed to convert. Those are not the same thing. And most coaching and consulting websites are brochures.
This doesn't mean it's not beautiful - in fact, design is a key component in your customer's pleasant and successful journey.
The professionals I work with who are getting speaking gigs, premium clients, and organic referrals have one thing in common: their site is built around the visitor's problem, not the founder's resume.
The structure matters more than the platform.
But the platform either enables or fights that structure. (I have built a full video training on platform options for coaches and consultants. I have linked it at the bottom of this post.)
The One Google Analytics Metric That Tells Coaches If Their Brand Is Landing
The #1 metric most people overlook is direct traffic.
In Google Analytics 4, (GA4) Direct traffic is the traffic that arrives at your site without a traceable referral source.
Most people treat it like an analytics problem, as though it represents missing data. It doesn't. It represents something far more valuable.
Direct traffic is your brand at work.
According to data from Orbit Media across tens of millions of sessions, direct traffic consistently sits at or near the top of every website's traffic acquisition report.
For the highest-traffic, direct traffic makes up the majority of all visits, according to Similarweb benchmark data.
The stronger the brand, the more direct traffic. Full stop.
What Direct Traffic Actually Measures
When someone arrives as direct traffic, here is what that usually means:
They typed your URL directly into their browser.
Someone recommended you and they looked you up.
They clicked a link inside an email, a PDF, or a text message.
They bookmarked your site after a previous visit.
They heard you on a podcast and went looking for you later.
Read that list again with the interpretation flipped.
Brand awareness. Word of mouth. Content that traveled beyond your website. Prior loyalty. A memorable impression.
"Direct traffic is not a measurement failure. It is a brand success metric." - Lee Aldridge
Why Direct Traffic Is the Only Channel Big Tech Cannot Take From You
Here is what makes direct traffic different from every other channel in your analytics.
It is not subject to algorithm changes.
It does not fluctuate with Google search updates.
It cannot be purchased by a competitor.
It does not disappear when a platform changes its rules.

➥ When someone types your URL because they heard you at an event, it shows up as direct.
➥ When they click a link in your newsletter, it shows up as direct.
➥ When someone forwards your email to a friend and that friend visits your site, it shows up as direct.
These are trust channels.
Trust channels convert at high rates for high-intent actions, the contact us click, the discovery call booking, the program application.
If you are building a brand, watch your direct traffic over time. Growth in direct traffic means your brand is growing in the real world, beyond what any algorithm can touch. And that your marketing is working.
How Coaches and Consultants Find Direct Traffic in Google Analytics
Open Google Analytics.
Go to Reports.
Click Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
Look for the channel listed as Direct.
That number, and the trend line behind it, tells you whether your brand is gaining momentum in the world.
Compare it month over month.
Compare it year over year. Watch what happens after you speak at an event, publish a strong piece of content, or run a podcast interview.
That is your brand at work.

Don't have Google Analytics connected yet?
Most website platforms make this simple. Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace all have a built-in GA4 integration under Settings. No code required. Google's official setup guide is here: [link to support.google.com/analytics]
The Simple Marketing Tech Stack That Makes the Machine Run
One of the most common mistakes I see coaches and consultants make is overbuilding their tech stack.
They invest in an all-in-one platform because it promises to handle everything. It usually handles everything at a mediocre level and costs twice as much.
Here is the stack I recommend.
Three tools. Roughly forty to fifty dollars per month. Each does one thing at a professional level.
1-Your website.
WordPress with Elementor is my top recommendation. It gives you design flexibility, a strong plugin ecosystem, and clean integrations. Wix is a solid second option, particularly for visual brands. If you are building on a budget, Squarespace and Webflow are viable. Kajabi and all-in-one platforms are not recommended for service-based coaches. They are designed for course creators and the websites look templated.
2-Your email.
MailerLite. It is simple, affordable, and does what it needs to do. Your email list is your most valuable marketing asset and the primary driver of direct traffic from recommendations and returning visitors.
3-Your scheduling.
That is the whole machine. Website converts the stranger. Email nurtures the warm lead. Acuity closes the loop to a booked call.

Five Ways to Grow Your Direct Traffic Without Paying for Ads
Growing direct traffic means growing your brand in the real world. Here is where to focus.
1-Ask for referrals. A genuine recommendation from someone who has worked with you converts better than any ad. And when that referral types your URL, it shows up as direct.
2-Show up on podcasts. Podcast listeners cannot click. When your episode lands, they type your name later. That is pure direct traffic and pure brand building.
3-Send a real email newsletter. Consistent email builds genuine loyalty and drives repeat visits. Your MailerLite list is your most reliable source of direct traffic growth.
4-Publish case studies. Named, specific, story-driven results build the kind of credibility that makes strangers look you up. They show up as direct.
5-Speak at events. In-person exposure drives unattributable traffic. Someone scans your QR code from a slide or types your URL on the drive home. It shows up as direct.
None of these can be accurately tracked to a single source. That is exactly why performance marketers have abandoned them. And exactly why they are your clearest path to uncontested brand growth.
The Shamanic Geek Take
I am a brand strategist who lives on platforms and also opens every client session with a grounding breath.
The reason I teach the technical side of marketing is this:
You cannot regulate your way to a broken machine.
The nervous system work matters enormously.
And it needs a solid structure underneath it to do anything in the world.
Your website, your email list, your analytics, your tech stack.
These are not separate from the soul of your brand.
They are how the soul of your brand shows up when you are not in the room.
Build it right. Measure the right things. And then do the work that makes people go looking for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is direct traffic in Google Analytics 4 and why does it matter for coaches and consultants?
Direct traffic in GA4 refers to visitors who arrive at your site without a traceable referral source, including people who typed your URL, clicked a link in an email or app, or visited from a recommendation. For coaches and consultants, direct traffic is one of the most reliable indicators of brand strength and word-of-mouth momentum.
What is the best website platform for coaches and consultants in 2026?
WordPress with Elementor is the top recommendation for coaches and consultants who want design flexibility and professional results. Wix is a strong second option. Squarespace and Webflow work for those building on a budget. All-in-one platforms like Kajabi are designed for course creators and are not recommended for service-based practices.
What is the simplest marketing tech stack for a solo coach or consultant?
Three tools: a website (WordPress or Wix), an email platform (MailerLite), and a scheduling tool (Acuity). Together these cost approximately forty to fifty dollars per month and handle the full client acquisition cycle from first visit to booked discovery call.
How do I know if my brand is actually growing?
Watch your direct traffic in Google Analytics 4 month over month and year over year. Consistent growth in direct traffic indicates your brand is gaining real-world momentum through referrals, media appearances, email, and word of mouth. It is the channel big tech cannot touch.
What does a high percentage of direct traffic on my website mean?
A high percentage of direct traffic is a positive signal. It indicates that visitors are arriving through brand awareness rather than search, which means your marketing efforts, speaking, publishing, email, and referrals, are working. The strongest brands consistently have direct traffic as their top or second-top acquisition channel.
